Steve Siefken Program

The Morrison Rotary Club listened to a very thoughtful and emotional presentation by Mr. Steve Siefken. Steve served in the Navy Intelligence Division. His dad also served in the Armed Forces. So when Steve was asked to participate in the recent Honor Flight he did so as a former serviceman and professional photographer. Steve placed pictures around the room depicting landmarks in Washington DC plus some very personal photos that really brought out emotions. Steve noted his favorite part, but the most emotional part, was reading "mail call" letters on the plane that were hand written by his family members. Steve is pictured here with a hat he wore in the service plus the hat his dad wore in combat. Thank you Steve for an emotionally charged presentation!

Rotarians learn about the B.L.I.N.D program

Morrison Rotary learns about B.L.I.N.D. program
Our Rotarians were treated to a presentation outlining the Building Lasting Impressions that Never Die (B.L.I.N.D) program. Our presenters were Melissa Landes, Student Council Leader and Jennifer Stevenson, Librarian at Morrison High School. What started in Sterling and Newman schools has now blossomed into 4 additional schools including Fulton, Morrison, Prophetstown and Rock Falls. Juniors and seniors in each of these schools apply to be leaders. Once the leaders are chosen a 2 day training in August prepares these kids leadership, team-building, community service skills and training to help freshmen transition into high school. IN September a retreat is held at Westwood with kids from every school. Last year just short of 500 kids participated! The kids learned team-building skills while building spaghetti towers and playing blind dodge ball. They also learn and practice the 40 developmental assets for teens. Each year the students write valentine cards for Nursing Home residents and they also send cards to military veterans on Veterans Day. We are so fortunate in Morrison that 14 students served as leaders last year to help freshman students acclimate to high school and find projects that make our community a better place!
Rotarian Dr. Brad Yaklich wanted each student to know that local Rotary clubs are looking for talented students to participate in college Rotary programs such as Rotaract.
Thank you ladies again for educating us on such a wonderful program.

Morrison Rotary donates a new Pollinator Garden

A few weeks ago Morrison Rotarian Dr. Dick Vandermyde introduced Christopher Stein, Chief, Heritage Areas and Large Landscape Initiatives National Park Service, Interior Regions 3- 5. Christopher introduced our Rotary Club to the Bee and Butterfly Fund Seed a Legacy program. He discussed how dependent on bees, butterflies and other insects to pollinate plants to provide the foods we eat every day. Christopher noted “One out of every three bites of food you eat exists because of the efforts of pollinators, including many fruits, vegetables, and seeds. Pollinators not only are necessary for our own food, but support the food and habitat of animals” In addition he noted “In the United States alone, pollination by honey bees contributed to over $19 billion of crop production in 2010, while pollination by other insect pollinators contributed to nearly $10 billion of crop production”
In June of 2020 the Rotary International Board of Directors and the The Rotary Foundation Trustees added “supporting the environment” as the 7th Area of Focus. Rotary Board members established a collaborative effort known as Operation Pollination. Operation Pollination recognizes the importance of pollinator habitat both restored and maintained on public and private lands.  Through collaboration and outreach, an interconnected mosaic of pollinator habitat interspersed between public and private land will be developed to stabilize and/or increase populations of pollinator species throughout your project area.
The Morrison Rotary Club agreed to join Operation Pollination as their 2021-22 project. The club wrote a District matching grant to fund the project. The Morrison Club voted to contribute $500 toward the project which was double-matched by our local 6420 District. The Morrison City Council agreed to donate up to an acre of land located at Waterworks Park on West Winfield St. An environmentally friendly herbicide was applied to remove grass and weeds from the site. Morrison resident Ron Shank plowed the area in October 2021. He plowed it again in April 2022. Next a grant was written to the Bee and Butterfly Fund Seed a Legacy program for seeds that are native to both bee and butterfly pollinators. Many thanks to Elsa Gallagher for providing 17 lbs. of a variety of clover, lavender hyssop, lemon mint, coneflowers, goldenrod and blackeyed susan seeds at no cost to our club. The garden was planted in late April. A sign was erected to commemorate the Morrison Rotary Clubs dedication to the preservation of pollinators in our area. Many thanks to Christopher Stein, Elsa Gallagher of the BBHF, Dr. Vandermyde for his vision, plus Morrison Rotarians and Rotary District 6420 for providing funds to make this vision a reality!

A changing of the guard took place on Wednesday, July 6. Rotary President Carrie Melton handed the gavel, along with a president pin, to incoming president Scott Vandermyde. Scott then presented Carrie with a plaque and a past-president pin. The Morrison Rotary is thankful for the leadership that Carrie provided. Under her watch we were able to plant a Pollinator Plot on West Winfield Street, provide funding for a new pavilion for the Dog Park and donate $5,500 in scholarships to Morrison High School Students. Carrie also manages the Student of the Month program where the Morrison Rotary recognizes 2 Morrison High School students each month. Those students are selected by MHS staff.

Harvest Hammer pays tribute to a long-time runner

The Harvest Hammer race lost a long-time participant recently. Ms. Diana Nelson was a regular runner in our race.  In 1982 Diana developed a passion for running and never looked back. While competing in hundreds of races over the years, Diana prided herself in never missing a day. Diana currently holds the 6th longest women’s retired running streak in the United States Running Streak Association where she had a streak of 9,396 days (which equates to 25 years, 8 months and two days) before she was sidelined by an injury, but this still didn’t slow her down. She bounced back and continued to run for well over another decade. During her running career she managed to log enough miles to the equivalent of running around the world over four times. She was featured in articles by the Sauk Valley Newspaper and Dixon Telegraph for her running achievements and was a longtime member of the Rock River Running Club, Cornbelt Running Club, Rockford Road Runners, Starved Rock Runners and the Sauk Valley Striders. We will certainly miss seeing Diana!

2021 Fun and Frolic

Thank you to Kevin Schisler and his assistant Kelly Smith for providing entertainment for our annual Fun and Frolic. Members had a chance to select a mystery gift bag and in the spirit of "Service above Self" then steal that gift bag from a fellow Rotarian. They also had a chance to "pay down" their annual fines by donning the infamous hat of knowledge and answering a trivia question about a fellow Rotarian. Most members failed and therefore paid their annual ransom plus a few dollars. Great job Kevin!

Morrison Rotary supports Literacy

The Morrison Rotary Club is committed to supporting Literacy in our community. The first project was presented by Meridith Layne, the Odell Librarian. "This year, we formally request financial assistance for the purchase of another $500 of physical books for children participating in this year’s Summer Reading Club, which extends learning opportunities to area children over the summer months to help prevent the decline of literacy skills, often referred to as “Summer Slide”. With your help, all Summer Reading Club participants would receive at least one book to keep building on the literacy skills that children have developed during the school year" Pictured here with all of the books purchased with the $500 Rotary grant is Ellen Smith, Literacy Chair, Katie Rider, Odell Library Summer Reading Club chair, and Mick Welding, Rotary President.

The second project was for junior high students. The Morrison Jr. High Principal Joe Robbins and instructor Ms. Jan Scott were working to update our reading texts to better align vertically across grade levels and also to change to the most recent edition of EL Education, the curriculum we use. A check for $500 was presented to Mr. Robbins and Ms. Scott by Ellen Smith, Morrison Rotary Literacy chair. These funds will purchase 55 books to help update their curriculum.

Quilts of Valor

Morrison Rotarian Suellen Girard presented an amazing program on October 7. She is a volunteer quilt maker for the Quilts of Valor, which was founded in 2003 to supply service members and veterans touched by war with the comfort and healing of a quilt. As of March 2020 this organization has provided over 250,000 quilts to veterans. Many of these soldiers have suffered some type of physical or psychological wound and a quilt can do so much to help them heal.  Even if you can’t sew a quilt you can donate funds to Quilts of Valor, https://www.qovf.org/ or you can donate fabric to a locate QOV group.
Suellen pours her heart and soul into each quilt she makes because she knows she can honor the military service her dad gave to his country. She displayed 4 quilts she made that would easily bring several hundred dollars if she were to sell them. We want to thank Suellen for her dedication and the investment she makes to comfort our veterans and their families. This certainly fulfills the Rotary motto of “Service about Self”.
If you would like to nominate someone for a quilt you can go to: https://www.qovf.org/nominations-awards/

Dr. Dick Vandermyde 90th Birthday
Twenty members of the Morrison Rotary club, spouses and Stan Steines daughters serenaded Dr. Dick Vandermyde on his 90th birthday on Father’s Day. He commented that Father’s Day was especially exciting for him since he had his four sons in to see him. But the Happy Birthday song by the Rotarians was icing on the cake. Doc has also been a member of the Morrison Rotary Club for the past 23 years. If you see Doc please wish him a very Happy Birthday. After all, he probably had a part in delivering about one-half of the Morrison population.

Levi Lewis and John Kophamer Hemp plant presentation

Levi Lewis (pictured here) and John Kophamer enlightened our Rotarians with a program featuring their first year adventure raising hemp. Levi said he and John had done a lot of research to understand the process of preparing ground, planting, cultivating and harvesting the plant. They started by purchasing seeds to plant on 5 acres. Each of the female only seeds cost $1.25. Additional costs were incurred to plant the seeds with a specially prepared planter that covered the seeds with a material to keep the seeds warm. Once the plants sprouted a lot of manual labor was required to weed the fields by hand. No pesticides could be used. The plants took about 8 weeks to grow to full maturity. Harvesting the plants had to be done by hand to carefully remove each stalk to prevent damage to the flower which held the CBD oil. Since they only planted female seeds the CBD oil contained NO THC, which is found in marijuana plants. The plants were then dried and the seeds were removed. They are still waiting for a processing plant to take the final product to extract the oil for CBD. When asked if the guys would plant another crop they answered “not before we reduce a lot of manual labor”. It was a great program. Very informative. Thank you John and Levi.

Blackhawk Statue renovation

Kim Smeja, Historic Preservationist, (pictured here) and Jan Stilson, Chairman of the Blackhawk Restoration Team, presented a program on efforts to restore the Black Hawk statue in Oregon. Kim was able to go up to view the restoration process first hand. She showed photos of the restoration efforts. Through the efforts of Illinois State Representative Tom Demmer the group was able to secure a $350,000 grant to fund the restoration efforts. Another $250,000 was raised for future maintenance and upgrades to the plaza around the statue. The statue, also called the Eternal Indian, was designed by Lorado Taft and dedicated in 1911. It is 48' tall and is perched on a 77' bluff overlooking the Rock River. Interesting enough, it is the 2nd largest concrete statue in the world! Restoration efforts will be completed by the end of this year!
Donations to continue to preserve the statue can be made at www.ilcf.org or sent to Illinois Conservation Foundation, One Natural Resources Way, Springfield, IL 62702.

2019 Annual Picnic

A note from John Prange, our Picnic committee chair!

A big thank you to all of you for your contribution toward another successful picnic.  57 adults and 11 children consumed all but 3.5 sandwich ribeyes at a total cost of $423.17 or $6.22/person.  And the side dishes were once again phenomenal!  And, of course, the group time with the committee is always special.

I have been thinking some more about when this all started.  My first picnic was in 1989 at George Piersol’s cabin on the Mississippi, the year after I joined Rotary (Oct 1988).  It began probably two years prior to that because I remember it being fairly new that year.  George grilled chicken over the big block grill.  George and Ron did the grilling that year.  Ron and I grilled the next year while George supervised and made sure everyone’s drinks were full.  I would imagine that it started 2-3 years prior to 1989, say 1986 – Ron might be able to piece that together.  That means this was #34.  That is a LONG time – great tradition!

So thanks again for helping to keep this tradition alive.  What say we do it again next year!!!!

PS:  EP had my tongs.  That 30+ year tradition continues as well as those two tongs have never been separated!

Bill Stoermer from Exelon Energy presentation

Bill Stoermer from Exelon Energy presented facts from the Nuclear Industry in Illinois
Illinois has 11 reactors, the most of any state that generate 52.2 percent of the state’s electricity while emitting no greenhouse gases. Illinois’ nuclear energy facilities employ more than 5,900 workers.  Illinois’ 11 nuclear power reactors produce 88 percent of the state’s emission-free electricity. These nuclear energy facilities protect air quality and public health. Nuclear energy generates nearly 20 percent of our nation’s electricity and provides more than 55 percent of our emission-free power, making it an essential partner to renewable energy. Nuclear is America’s most reliable source of electricity. Illinois nuclear plants produced power more than 96 percent of the time over the past three years, ensuring power is available whenever it is needed. Nuclear energy is a vital part of U.S. infrastructure that keeps electricity prices and grids stable.

2019 RYLA Students

Morrison Rotary Club Sends Seventeen Students to Rotary Leadership Camp

This year the Morrison Rotary Club, in partnership with the Erie Rotary Club, is sending 13 Morrison High School and 4 Prophetstown High School students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp (RYLA). The camp will take place this past weekend May 3-5 at the Lorado Taft campus of NIU at Lowden State Park.

The purpose of RYLA is for students to improve their leadership skills as they work together in teams. They meet students from all over northwestern Illinois as well as exchange students from all parts of the world. Lasting friendships are built during this time. The camp is staffed by Rotarians from around the District who volunteer their time to provide a safe, positive atmosphere for the students. Approximately 120 students attend the camp each year.

The camp has an amazing impact on students’ lives. Several past Morrison High School campers have gone on to become student Counselors/helpers at the RYLA camp; one student went on to find the nearest RYLA camp in the Rotary district where they were going to college and helped them run their camp for two years.

This is the second year in a row the Morrison Rotary Club has sponsored students from both Morrison and Prophetstown. Because of the large number of applicants, and because the club did not want to turn anyone down, the Erie Rotary Club stepped up and assisted with the funds to send them. Another club, Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary, also helped to contribute to the cause.

The Morrison Rotary Club organizes the Harvest Hammer 5K Race and Duathlon each Fall. It is their only fundraiser. Proceeds from the Harvest Hammer are used each year to provide scholarships to Morrison High School Seniors, send students to RYLA and fund community and international projects.

Our club mourns the loss of Don Miller

The Morrison Rotary club members lost a wonderful member. Don Miller passed away on January 4th at the young age of 90. Don joined the Morrison Rotary club on September 13, 1967 making him a 52 year veteran! Don served his country in the armed forces and he was a long time school teacher in the Morrison Schools. I am proud to say that I was a teammate of Don's trivia team for several years which benefited the Friends of the Park. He was our song leader whenever we had a Rotarian birthday. He loved a good joke and he would laugh whenever he was fined for some trivial offense at our noon luncheons. He will be missed!

Don Miller celebrates 50 years with the Morrison Rotary Club

On September 13, 1967 Don Miller attended his first Rotary meeting. Now, 50 years later we had the pleasure of honoring Don on his golden anniversary. President Dr. Brad Yacklich went to Odell Library to unearth some Rotary treasures from days gone by. Don was a big part of the memories of many of those years. He has assumed the role of honorary song leader and he does his best to lead us to sing happy birthday to all of our Rotarians on their big day. Don recalled a year where he had to step into the presidency due to an unexpected vacancy. He finished that year and then served the next. We honor Don who began teaching in Morrison back in the early 50’s. Don said he just got out of the Air Force and he was taking the place of a teacher who was drafted into the military. Don has had a career in acting in many plays in the Morrison area including Fiddler on the Roof where he had to grow a beard to play the part of a rabbi. We wish Don many more years with our club. Fellow Rotarian Gary Steinert said it best “Don has been a role model and a mentor to so many” Congratulations Don Miller on your 50th Anniversary with the Morrison Rotary Club!

Tree Planted at French Creek Park

Our National Rotary Club President challenged each club to plant a tree. This Pear tree was planted at the Morrison IL French Creek Park. We hope it will bless residents of our community with pears for generations to come. This tree actually joins 4 apple trees, 2 peach trees, 4 cherry trees and 2 other pear trees at the park. All of these fruits are free for our community to use as they please. The only stipulation is that the club would like a pie baked from the fruit of one or more of the trees.

Morrison Rotary Road Cleanup

The Morrison Rotary group conducted their bi-annual road clean up on August 2. Helping to keep our community a cleaner place were Rotarians (l-r) Jim Camp, Mick Welding, Mark Schuler (our fearless leader), Mike Blean, Kevin Schisler, Dr. Bill Bird, Tanner Girard and Dan Vandermyde. Not pictured, but equally as effective in clean up duty were Don Jevne, and Mike Gunderson. These Rotarians display service above self. Other Rotarians were not able to attend as they placed spouse's above service, which is certainly understandable. Thanks again to Merle and Mark, who always ferry the workers back and forth along the road in their very safe, dependable and fuel-efficient Dodge vehicles.

Morrison Rotary Club plays in Benjamin Dover Golf outing

Our Morrison Rotary Club participated in the first annual Benjamin Dover Memorial Golf outing. The format of the tournament was the mastermind of our District Governor. Our fearless leader, Tanner was designated to hit a fairway wood, JP hit the 5 iron, Mick tried to hit the 7 iron and Gary masterfully hit the wedge. After all the dust settled, our club finished with an 84 for a respectable 4th place finish out of 16 teams! The entry fee was used to raise money for Polio Plus so all-in-all a great time was had by all and it was for a good cause.

Kenya Water Project - Finished

Posted by Kathy Schmidt on Jan 09, 2014

This is a letter from the Rotary Host Club Kissumu Kavirondo's President Pamela Alba.

Dear Kathy and Larry
Happy new year.
Thanks for appreciating the work we have done with your club. I also wish for you to know that we appreciate this very much and my village is extremely happy for is like a dream to them. You can't believe it that I have been away in Mombasa working on clearing two containers that have been lying there since July 2013 and am just about done. I was there for 4 weeks and that was just a week after commissioning this koker water. I came back and found the community had mobilized themselves and done piping of another line of 2.5 km away and into ten different homes only waiting to be provided with water meters and as I speak these people have water running in their homes and everybody is jumping and excited in a way I can't believe. I used that to walk to people and talk to them about starting a club and now 15 people have registered their names with us including the member of Parliament for the area. Another man who connected a meter immediately is farming  tomatoes and they already flowering. Nice year.
Pamela

Kenya Water Project Almost Complete

Posted by Kathy Schmidt on Oct 13, 2013

Here is the latest update from our Host Club in Kenya:

I hope you shall be impressed by all this and everyone involved will not regret having worked with us. this has led to the formation of rotary community Corps that we shall hand over the management to so that the good intentions of rotary is kept. the koker group has even used their RCC registered group to source for a loan to fund a 10000 litres tank so that they can pump into a reservoir instead. this group fetched water that had even flown along the road side during flushing and were even fighting for it. they have dug the trenches too and the pipe laying is  starting tomorrow.  We will handover this site first week of November. we are forever grateful to you Kathy and Larry for your efforts to make this succeed. Say thanks to all involved and just as I find much satisfaction when I see the happy faces of the women around the water point looking like a God has fallen down from heaven, I believe all of you will find even more satisfaction in this. I feel like I want to be associated with rotary the more as it has brought satisfaction in my life.
thanks  PamelaImage

Another Year of Harvest Hammer Success

Posted by Kathy Schmidt on Sep 22, 2013

The official count 547 participants!   About 40 shy from our record last year.  It was a great day - the timing company did their job well and awards were actually handed out on the day of the event!  Over 100 duathletes enjoyed a ride in the country while 244 Walkers and 149 children made it a day.  Thanks to our food sponsors, Resthave for the delicious homemade cookies, Hardees and McDonalds also provided cookies, Sullivans for the Apple Crisp apples and Hyvee for the oranges.  US Cellular provided the water and an anonymous donor provided the gatoraide.  Thanks also to the many volunteers who came from many groups within Morrison - we couldn't do it without them.

Grant gives Junior High School special needs students extra help

Posted by Kathy Schmidt on Oct 09, 2012

Morrison Rotary wrote a grant through Rotary International and recently received the matching funds to purchase two Ipad 3’s and a special reading program entitled “Orton Gillingham Language Tune Up Kit for Schools” for the Morrison Junior High. These tools will help students in the Junior High that struggle with reading and language skills.  The Ipad 3’s are significant because they have speech to text dictation which enables the students to dictate to a word document.  It can also take pictures of text documents such as worksheets and then the students listen to the text when they need it instead of waiting for staff availability.  The language program has proven success in bringing students to an 8th grade reading level after completion of the 87 lesson program.  The licensing will allow for 100 student id’s so it will benefit many students.

Presenting these items to the Junior High Staff are  (LtoR) Rotary President, Kevin Schisler, Susan Liggon, Instructor, Chris Tichler, Instructor, and Ellen Smith, Rotary Grant Chair

Key features of the 2011 World Affairs Seminar included explore cutting – edge topics in the areas of emerging economic and technological development in sustainable systems, global security and human rights, conservation efforts and service learning projects. They heard about current trends and discussed their importance. They also learned which institutions are engaged in the conversation on global sustainable development.

“It was an awesome experience” the girls said.  “We met so many people from different places and learned alot about global and environmental issues.”   The World Affairs Seminar is the vision of Rotarian Dr. Dale Brock, whose vision was to bring about better understanding of world problems within a select group of young people from around the world.

Mr. Antony Deter's 6th Grade class was studying about Japan when the Disaster happened last fall.  He wanted to find a way for his class to participate in the relief efforts.  He found out about Shelter Box and it has been their goal to raise $1000.  Last week the students were told that they had raised $1,250.00  Brian Adams from Rotary Shelter Box came to their school and showed them the box and contents.   Morrison Rotary then challenged the students to raise another $250 in less than a week before school was out and Rotary would donate another $500 toward  2 Shelter Boxes.  On Wed, May 25, the 6th grade students reached their goal !

Please let the 6th grade students and teachers know how proud we are of their efforts and thank them.  Rotary President Barb Bees and Vice President Kathy Schmidt presented a check to Mr. Dieter and his class on Friday May 27th before the students left for the summer.

"Lloyd has been very helpful in keeping records of the Clubs membership since it was founded in 1924.

This is just a small way we could repay him" stated Merle Reisenbigler, Co-Chairman of the event.

A  social time was enjoyed at the Reisenbigler home following the clean- up.

The weather may have threatened but the Morrison Rotary club carried on with it's Highway 30 clean-up.  15 members worked the Route 30 highway east of Dairy Queen and continued to Lyndon Road.  Multiple orange bags stacked by the Morrison sign showed there was plenty of garbage.
Afterward a fantastic social was hosted at Merle and Sharon's - thank you!   Special thanks to Mark Schuler for spearheading the clean-up project.Image

Rotary Annual Picnic - GREAT!

Posted by Kathy Schmidt

The Annual Rotary picnic held at Morrison Rockwood State Park on September 7 was a

great time.  A large number of members and their family  enjoyed steaks,

chops, and hamburgers as well as delicious homemade fixings. Baggo was a hit

for the youth and some Rotarians even ventured to play "minute to win it" by blowing

bubbles through a hoop .   Yes, we have bubble blowing champions in the group!

Thanks to all who helped make this fun and enjoyable event for the group.

ROTARIANS OUT TO THE BALL GAME!

A great time was had by 16 Rotarians and their guests at the Clinton Lumberkings Game Wednesday night.  While it was a bit warm, there was plenty of beer and cool refreshments to quench the thirst as well as brats, hot dogs, and hamburgers.

Bill Ortman and his wife were on hand to join the group and Colleen Buckwalter gave a great performance throwing out the first game ball across home plate - great job Colleen!

Oh yes, and there was a baseball game happening as well - not sure how it ended as a storm threatened to roll in and a few us left early!
Special thanks to Gary Hayenga for organizing the event and carrying on the tradition.  Enjoy the pictures!
